What is Convection Cooking?

All About Convection Cooking

Convection cooking is very useful but also can be very complicated. We decided to break it down for you in this blog, as well as in one of our newest videos, which can be found here. Read on to learn all about the pros and cons of convection ovens, what you should look for when purchasing, as well as all of the different types!

Pros:

There are many pros and cons to having a convection oven. One of the biggest benefits is that food does not have as much moisture taken away from it. For example, many people prefer to heat up their food in a convection oven or microwave rather than a traditional microwave in order to preserve the taste and texture of the food.

Additionally, convection cooking allows you to utilize every rack, as the convection fan makes cooking more effective. The fan will also be constantly moving air around the oven, so you are able to cook more food at once and have fewer batches. One of the very best selling points is it can reduce your cooking time by 25% and creates even heating around the food.

Cons:

One drawback to consider is some recipes may not be fit for convection ovens. For example, if you are making a decadent cake, it may not be best to cook in a convection oven. However, many recipes have started to adapt to this, and you are able to find some online that you will be able to make with your convection oven.

What to Look For:

It is important to note that there are two different styles of convection, both offered with microwaves and ovens. The most common convection type features one heating element above, one heating element below, and a fan in the back to circulate the air. The second type is True convection. Also called European convection, this type features an additional third heating element behind the fan.

Our Favorite Convection Microwave:

A convection oven is a very great alternative to an air fryer. They are significantly different compared to regular microwaves. As mentioned previously, there is a heating element above and below, and behind as well as all the traditional microwave elements. Convection ovens cook faster and better, making them far more superior to non-convection microwaves.

One of our favorites is the ZLINE Wall Oven microwave. The 24” Microwave Oven (MWO-24) is a modern upgrade to any kitchen suite, and you can enjoy its advanced features and versatile built-in installation.

You can purchase and learn more about this wall oven at one of ZLINE’s vendors The Range Hood Store here.

Our Favorite Convection Oven:

A convection oven is great because it will circulate hot air around the food, searing the food as it goes in. It heats much faster because of the airflow. Our personal favorite part about a convection oven is that it can significantly decrease the amount of time of your cooking. For smaller foods such as cookies, it may only be a minute or so, but with larger foods such as a turkey, it could shave as much as an hour off your cooking time. This could mean waking up at 7 am to cook your Thanksgiving dinner rather than waking up at 6 am, which makes a huge difference on such a long and fun day.

Our favorite ovens with convection elements are the ZLINE Dual Fuel Ranges. With sizes ranging from 24”-60”, you can find the perfect range with a convection oven to fit your home.
