Your Top Dishwasher Questions

In the next part of our top asked appliance questions series, we take a deep dive into all things dishwashers. From different cleaning methods to what the temperature should be, this blog has it all. We enjoyed answering the most commonly asked dishwasher questions, and we hope you enjoy learning about them!

What features should I look for when purchasing a new dishwasher?

Obviously this is a personal preference, however here are a few favorite dishwasher features we recommend looking for if you’re in the market for an upgrade. Delayed start on a dishwasher is something that many homeowners choose. Certain cycles can be extra noisy, so choosing when it is going to run is convenient for many people. This can also allow you to take advantage of the times of day where using your appliances will cost you less!

Having a water filter feature is a given. This ensures your food is not being rewashed through the cycle and touching all of your dishes. A food disposer is not necessarily required, but can be a convenient feature. When homeowners have this feature, you will eliminate the need to scrape the leftover sticky food off your plates before putting them into the dishwasher.

Electric controls can also be a very convenient feature. They are easy to clean, and aesthetically pleasing because you can’t see them, as they sit on top of the door of the dishwasher.

What should I consider before purchasing a dishwasher?

It is always important to consider how much you will be washing your dishes. A 24" dishwasher is usually big enough, as it carries about 12-16 place settings. Additionally, it is also important to consider if a 24” dishwasher will fit in your kitchen. For most it will, however some smaller spaces may require an 18” dishwasher.

Another important factor in your buying decision is how the dishwasher looks. Stainless steel is a classic option and is high quality, but there are also other finishes such as colored and wooden panels. Usually the handles can look different as well, and many people have a preference on this. Since your dishwasher is typically used everyday in larger households, if looks are important to you this is something important to consider.

What is the best temperature to ensure my dishwasher is cleaning properly?

Of course it is important to check with the manufacturer, but as long as the temperature resides around 130 degrees fahrenheit (or about 54 degrees celsius), your dishes should be being cleaned properly.

How long should my dishwasher work before breaking down?

This is a great question! The average lifespan of a dishwasher is about 8-12 years. If there are issues before that time frame, reach out to your manufacturer about getting it repaired, and check to see if you are still in warranty.

Why does my dishwasher smell?

This is a common problem, and could be for many reasons, but one of the main reasons may be that it does not have a food disposer, which causes food to get trapped in the crevices of the dishwasher. It is important to make sure every nook and cranny of your dishwasher is cleaned out frequently, not only for the sake of the smell, but also for the sake of the cleanliness of the dishwasher.

How should I clean my dishwasher?

1. Clear the drain: Make sure to inspect the drain for any remaining food that may be stuck in there.

2. Put Vinegar in the dishwasher: Make sure it is empty, and place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine. Make sure the dishwasher is running on a hot water cycle, as this will help get rid of grease and odors.

3. Lastly, sprinkle about a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short hot water cycle again.

How often should I clean my dishwasher?

Four times a year is usually the perfect amount!

How do I unclog my dishwasher?

1. Check your drain hose attached to your garbage disposal under the sink. Make sure there's no debris inside and tighten the clamp attaching the hose to make sure there's secure drainage.

2. Make sure the garbage disposal is functioning correctly by running it a few times. You can also use a manufacturer approved draining liquid to help this process.

3. Next, make sure there's no debris around the filter causing back up in your dishwasher. Remove the filter and clean.

4. Lastly, pour in some vinegar and baking soda around the drain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Once finished, pour hot water down the drain and run a cycle.
